Ushuhuda
About Us
Who We Are
Ushuhuda Children’s Home is a beacon of hope for vulnerable children in Kenya. Located in a quiet corner of Mitero Village, our home has been a safe haven for children from impoverished backgrounds and orphaned situations since its humble beginnings.
Founded by Mrs. Heissner in 2011 as a feeding program at Gikindu Primary School, Ushuhuda has grown into a full-fledged children’s home that now supports 18 children — 12 boys and 6 girls — by offering them shelter, education, nourishment, and emotional support.
Our Journey
The story of Ushuhuda Children’s Home began with a single act of kindness. In 2011, Mrs. Heissner initiated a feeding program to combat hunger among school-going children at Gikindu Primary School. Her compassion and determination to do more saw her open the doors of her mother’s home in Mitero Village in 2013, where she took in four needy children and cared for them for six months.
Recognizing the growing need and with deep commitment, she secured a leased house, which
continues to serve as the ocial residence of the children’s home today.
Our Approach
Our Children
Ushuhuda Children’s Home currently houses 18 children from disadvantaged backgrounds. Some are total orphans, while others come from families that are unable to provide even the most basic needs.
Thanks to the generosity of well-wishers and sponsors, all our children are enrolled in school —ranging from lower primary to college-level education. Their academic progress is a testament to the power of collective compassion and the unwavering belief that education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty.
